James and Lillian Portman

The 7th Lillian & James Portman Conference for Direct Care
Workers
is designed to enhance the current knowledge and skills
of people who provide hands-on assistance with daily personal care.
It is an excellent training resource for employers committed to the
professional development of direct care staff.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

Nursing assistants, personal care attendants, home health and
home care aides, home help providers, private duty caregivers and
adult/resident care assistants.

WHO ARE THE CONFERENCE HOSTS?

The Lillian & James Portman Conference grew out of an exceptional
experience that several families and their relatives had at Huron
Woods, a residential dementia program located on the campus of
St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

The families' dream was to create an innovative educational
program designed to enhance the current knowledge and skills of
direct care staff working with people with dementia and their families.
In 1996, Myrna and Newell Miller, daughter and son-in-law of
Lillian and James Portman, established an educational endowment
in their memory to educate others who provide the hands-on care
for people with dementia. The conference is now hosted by
a group of families who collectively are grateful for the attentive,
respectful and compassionate care that was given to their relatives
by skillful nursing assistants. If you would like to join this cadre of
families, please contact Myrna Miller at 734.994.1220.
